Water-based inks, oil-based inks that can be cleaned with water, oil-based inks that are not water soluble, letterpress inks to name a few, are just a few examples. So how do you choose the right type of ink and the right manufacturer? We will address this issue in this article.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a2b24d8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a2b24d8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Water-based inks for linocutting<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-148a66e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"148a66e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Water-based inks are at first sight a good choice when you want to learn about\u00a0<strong>linocut<\/strong>. They are inexpensive, offer a variety of colors and are easy to clean. But in reality I don\u2019t recommend these ranges especially if you are not equipped with a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/en\/which-press-for-linocut\/\">printing press<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca6b7da elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ca6b7da\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21361\" src=\"https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/encres-schmincke-linol-japanese-linocut.jpg\" alt=\"Schmincke Linocut japanese ink\" width=\"350\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/encres-schmincke-linol-japanese-linocut.jpg 350w, https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/encres-schmincke-linol-japanese-linocut-150x193.jpg 150w, https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/encres-schmincke-linol-japanese-linocut-300x386.jpg 300w, https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/encres-schmincke-linol-japanese-linocut-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>Indeed, in order to obtain uniform colors, it will be necessary to exert a strong pressure.<br \/><br \/>I will not dwell on the inks that I do not recommend, but if I had to recommend only two to leave the choice I would say the Gerstaecker ink which works rather well and can give good renderings, as a test, as well as the college Linol range from Schmincke with which I was able to achieve perfect flat tints with deep blacks.<br \/><br \/>Note that among the advantages of these inks we can cite that they dry really fast. This will be useful for testing, for example. They are also easily found in graphic arts stores.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3e25ae6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3e25ae6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"francois\"><p>Note: Whatever ink I use, I don&#8217;t work it with a spatula but with a roller directly. I spread a line of ink with a knife the width of my Japanese brayer. And I just grazed this one with my roller. I will then do a lot of back and forth on a glass plate, adding more ink little by little. The result is always the same. An extremely thin film of ink on the roll that doesn&#8217;t block out even the finest details. This technique works perfectly whether the ink is viscous or liquid and always results in the same quality. The mistake not to make is to put too much ink on the roll at once. While their drying time may be one of their weaknesses, the advantages are far more numerous.<\/p><p><strong>Oil-based linocut inks<\/strong>\u00a0are already very pleasant to work with. They do not dry out during work or at least not as quickly as water-based products, which makes sense. They also spread very well with a brayer and adhere perfectly to linoleum.<\/p><p>I\u2019ve said it before but I\u2019ll say it again, oil-based\u00a0<strong>linocut inks<\/strong>\u00a0from Cranfield, for example, are excellent\u00a0<strong>for quality lino prints<\/strong>\u00a0whether you have a\u00a0<strong>printing press<\/strong>\u00a0or not. Be careful, however. I would like to point out that this will depend on the paper used as well. The smoother your paper, the more you can do without a press. Conversely, a heavily textured paper will give you more trouble to be fully inked. The weight of the paper is also important. The main thing is to test again and again. Don\u2019t hesitate to find my advices to know\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/en\/which-paper-to-use-for-linocut\/\">which paper to use for printmaking<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-864011b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"864011b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19403\" src=\"https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/encres-aquawash-japanese-linocut.webp\" alt=\"Aqua Wash Ink Japanese Linocut\" width=\"350\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/encres-aquawash-japanese-linocut.webp 350w, https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/encres-aquawash-japanese-linocut-150x193.webp 150w, https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/encres-aquawash-japanese-linocut-300x386.webp 300w, https:\/\/japanese-linocut.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/encres-aquawash-japanese-linocut-233x300.webp 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/>I was able to try\u00a0<strong>several brands of oil-based inks<\/strong>\u00a0such as Charbonnel\u2019s aquawash, for example, which I like for its rich colors and ease of use, but I deplore its drying time, which is far too long. And this will be even more true with a very smooth paper because it will never really dry completely. Even after several months, passing the hand over the illustration may leave traces depending on the media.<\/p><p>To speed up the drying process you can use drier but I must admit I am not a fan of this solution. That\u2019s why I have chosen to work exclusively with the\u00a0<strong>Cranfield range of inks<\/strong>, which have all the advantages without the disadvantages for me. They are beautiful, work wonderfully well, don\u2019t clog any details, are unparalleled in finesse and dry fairly quickly. The negative point will be on the supply side since to my knowledge no French store sells it. Not surprisingly, these\u00a0<strong>oil inks are ideal for printmaking<\/strong>. At least if you are not afraid of cleaning. Indeed, if we can blame them for anything, it\u2019s this. You will need to arm yourself with rags and vegetable oil. It is useless to force to obtain a good result. It will just take a little patience and several passes to restore your linoleum to its original appearance.<br \/>You can use chemical compounds such as white spirit for example, but this is not a panacea for the environment. I leave it to you to make your choice.<\/p><p>Coming back to our\u00a0<strong>letterpress inks<\/strong>\u00a0of the Cranfield range, you will obtain with, vibrant colors, well contrasted and very pleasant to work with. I encourage you to choose this range if your idea is to use gold, copper or silver colors. I also encourage you to use only quality inks for your prints. Nothing is more frustrating than getting a bad print just because of the ink.
