Description

In this linocut entitled “Praise of Tea”, I pay homage to traditional Japan and the subtle beauty found in Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s in Praise of Shadows. As in that work, which celebrates shade, subdued light and simplicity, I sought to capture a moment of absolute tranquility, where a young woman, kneeling on tatami mats, savors a moment of calm with a cup of tea. The soft light of the shoji barely reveals the details of her kimono, evoking a world where one allows oneself time to contemplate.

Hand-printed on Japanese mulberry paper, this Japanese engraving is designed to honor the art of printmaking. Each copy is signed and numbered, guaranteeing a unique and authentic object, just like the objects evoked in Tanizaki’s writings, which know how to stand the test of time with elegance and humility.

By choosing this Japanese print, Praise of tea, you invite into your home a fragment of this Japanese art of living, a space of quietude and refinement, where I explore the philosophy of light and shadow, playing on every nuance to reveal the beauty hidden in simplicity.
