Handmade Japanese linocut “Contemplation” in blue

This print is the fruit of my passion for Japan, a country that has fascinated me since childhood. I’ve always dreamed of living in an uncluttered interior overlooking a Zen garden, like the ones I’d seen in books. Today, I invite you to share this dream with me through this engraving depicting a scene of contemplation.

Produced on Wenzhou paper, a mulberry paper prized for its texture and durability, this work uses the linocut technique. I delicately etched a motif onto a linoleum plate, then used a Japanese baren to transfer the blue ink onto the paper, creating an image of exceptional softness and depth.

The scene depicted is that of an uncluttered Japanese interior, adorned with wooden furniture and tatami mats, overlooking a Zen garden. Shades of blue add a dimension of calm and serenity to the image. A coffee table in the foreground, topped by a lacquered tray and two cups, invites relaxation, contemplation and reading, offering a tranquil escape into the beauty of Japan.

This print is an expression of my love for Japan and my quest for serenity. It also evokes my childhood memories and current aspirations. I hope you enjoy it and that it brings a little calm and beauty to your daily life.
