Namba Yasaka-jinja: Japanese engraving of the Osaka Singular Shrine

Description
In this Japanese linocut entitled “Namba Yasaka-Jinja”, I pay tribute to one of Osaka’s most intriguing shrines, renowned for its impressive lion-head façade and its ability to capture the imagination.

In Japanese culture and Shintoism, lions are often sacred guardians, believed to ward off evil spirits and attract good fortune. The massive lion’s head of the Namba Yasaka embodies this protective function. Its gaping maw seems to “swallow up” negative energies, purifying places and visitors alike.

The mystical atmosphere that emanates from this place, between spirituality and architectural singularity, inspired me to retranscribe this blend of power and serenity in the lines and textures of this Japanese print.

With this work, I wanted to capture not only the visual majesty of this temple, but also the symbolic force it embodies: a place where past and present meet, a space for contemplation in the face of an almost mythological architecture. The chiselled details of the lion’s head mingle with light and shadow to evoke both the protection and mystery characteristic of Japan’s spiritual heritage.
