Japanese Daruma linocut entitled ‘Gratitude’

Description

This original print was created as part of my entry for the Polymanga competition, based on the theme “Thank You”. Inspired by the powerful symbolism of the Daruma, I chose to illustrate a key moment of gratitude: the moment when one paints the second eye of the figurine, as a sign of thanks after a wish has been fulfilled. In Japan, the Daruma is a traditional Japanese object, a symbol of perseverance, luck and success. When one makes a wish, one paints the first eye. Once that wish has come true, one completes the second eye, thus marking a moment of recognition and gratitude. In this hand-engraved print, I wanted to capture this intimate and symbolic gesture: a person in the process of finishing their Daruma, visually conveying a “thank you” after a journey completed. As a fan of Daruma, this symbolism seemed natural to me.
