Description

“Delicacy” is a linocut print depicting a woman dressed in a yukata, peacefully combing her hair with a traditional Japanese comb in a room with tatami flooring and shoji screens.

In our studio, we enjoy celebrating the female figure, as seen in our prints “In Praise of Tea” and “Dreams.” I took great pleasure in carving this woman and capturing the delicacy of her face. Her finely detailed eyebrows and eyelashes required a great deal of patience, and I had to revisit them several times before achieving the subtle level of refinement I was looking for.

I adorned her yukata with Japanese cranes, symbols of longevity and good fortune, and lilies evoking purity, elegance and femininity. Her traditional comb features a pine tree motif, an evergreen traditionally associated with longevity, steadfastness and resilience.

Every detail contributes to the calm, intimate atmosphere of this Japanese-inspired print—a suspended moment devoted to the beauty of an everyday gesture.
