Description

This linocut is an original work inspired by Osaka Castle, one of Japan’s most famous. Osaka Castle was built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a great warlord who unified the country. It was the scene of several historic battles between the Toyotomi and Tokugawa clans, who fought for power. Today, the castle is a symbol of Osaka and a popular tourist attraction.

As a lover of Japanese castles, I had to make it happen. It’s one of the very first I’ve seen on site, 10 years ago! I hesitated a lot with the one in Nagoya, which I also find magnificent! In short, I wanted it surrounded by trees, but I wanted them to be treated very sparingly to highlight the structure. I’ve deliberately treated some details only partially, to make them more faded and therefore realistic.
